Additive manufacturing with arc and wire (3DMP®) - actual status and potentials of a promising technology for maritime applications

The 3DMP® process is the first additive process ever to enable simple components to be produced economically - even in direct comparison with conventional machining methods. The 5-axis processing provides a variety of geometric freedoms, such as the realization of cavities, which make it possible to reduce the weight of components.
The wide range of materials by using the 3DMP® process opens up completely new possibilities for the production of components for maritime applications.

Maritime Cyber Resilience Forum

Digital Ship is excited to return to Hamburg, with the next in our series of Cyber Resilience Forums, taking place during SMM on 5 September 2018.

Cyber security is high on our agenda with ever-increasing threats being proven to disrupt business continuity. Real life examples in the maritime industry, and related sectors; including ports, terminals and the supply chain, clearly demonstrate the impact of cyber-attacks.

An up-to-date insight into the cyber-threat landscape is imperative to protect our business processes and data from attacks, damage or security breaches. Ship operators need to analyse potential risks, explore legal aspects, and incorporate cyber resilience into their daily operations in order to organise business operations to reduce vulnerability.

In this era of the connected ship, with developments such as the cloud, IoT, electronic data exchange in the logistic chain, electronic navigation systems, we rely increasingly on technology, which makes cyber resilience business critical. So, how do we embed this into the maritime organisation, and how do we incorporate cyber security into all our systems and operations? If incidents occur, how do we respond and make the necessary contingency or recovery plans? We will also investigate regulations and guidelines to develop a safe, compliant, cyber capability in shipping.

The human factor is often claimed to be the weakest link. Ship operators need to increase cyber awareness both in the office and on-board. In this Forum, we will discuss ways to mobilise internal commitment, set up training and incorporate cyber awareness into daily procedures.

Building on the great success of the Maritime Cyber Resilience Forum in Rotterdam, Athens, Singapore and Hamburg last year, the 3 key sessions during this Digital Ship’s Maritime Cyber Resilience Forum Hamburg will contain plenary presentations and panel discussions:

Session One: Facing the Cyber Threat: An Overview of Maritime Cyber Challenges and Focus on Building Resilience

AIRCOAT - Air Induced friction Reducing ship Coating

The Air Induced friction Reducing ship COATing (AIRCOAT) project promotes a groundbreaking technology with a high potential to revolutionise the ship-coating sector by reducing energy consumption and ship emissions. AIRCOAT aims to develop a biomimetic passive air lubrication technology inspired by the Salvinia effect. A team of ten European scientists and industry experts received funding from the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme to develop and demonstrate the AIRCOAT prototype. This workshop includes insightful presentations on the objectives of AIRCOAT and the findings of previous relevant projects. MarSat WORKSHOP: Maritime Industry meets Space

MarSat invites you to the 2ᶮᵈ MarSat Workshop 'Maritime Industry meets Space' on Thursday, 6 September 2018, 14.00 - 16.00 at the SMM Maritime Trade Fair in Hamburg.

The workshop provides an excellent platform to discuss challenges and solutions for the maritime industry in the digital era with a strong focus on the contribution of modern satellite capabilities (Earth Observation), modeling services and data flows.

MarSat, a network of four companies and a research institute, develops new innovative services to increase efficiency, safety and cost saving for the maritime industry based on satellite data services. These services include the optimization of ship routes, daily ice services or seabed and bathymetry mapping. Alongside shipping, the offshore industry and emergency and rescue services will also benefit from these new services.

The results of MarSat, a 2.5 years research project, will also be showcased.

For more information or to register, please email MarsatWorkshop@eomap.de.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Lloyd's List SMM Business Briefing - Three Elements of Efficiency

SMM is the maritime industry’s foremost technology event. Not surprisingly, the regulatory and human resources elements can be lost amid the engines, energy, and enterprise.

This Lloyd’s List Business Briefing draws on the expertise of industry leaders to explain how a deep understanding of the regulatory framework and an appreciation of the skills needed by tomorrow’s seafarers will enhance the benefits of next generation technology.

Our Three Elements of Efficiency briefing will put maritime technology into the wider context of maritime transformation.

MMG – 3D print in large scale

MMG is one of the first companies in the maritime industry that uses additive manufacturing to support their production processes for tailor-made marine propeller. In order to prepare the casting of these small batch series each propeller type needs an accurate pattern equipment. MMG has recently started to print these pattern equipment using additive manufacturing. Due to the size of these parts special 3D-printing in large scale is necessary. Dr. Greitsch introduces you to their approach of printing in large scale.

Shape optimization for 3D Printing – Is the outcome worth the effort?

Additive manufacturing is one of the most promising novel technologies within the industry 4.0. Apart from other advantages, it allows the designer to create entirely new shapes for technical applications. These innovative solutions for existing technical applications can be found by using Finite Element Simulation and shape optimization.
In this presentation, I want to show the potential of the optimization by means of a demo case. Furthermore, I want to discuss if the outcome is always worth effort of the optimization or if there are more effective alternatives being suitable for industrial usage.
