gmec, the global maritime environmental congress

6 September 2016

A unique opportunity to share experience and visions

Building on the success of gmec 2012 and 2014, Hamburg will once again host gmec during SMM 2016. The congress is a testimony to how seriously the maritime industry now takes its environmental responsibilities. Organised by SMM and Seatrade, it brings all key industry sectors together to initiate further international agreements.

Not only is gmec a unique opportunity for participants to share their experiences and visions, the event is the ideal place to rub shoulders with key influencers and stakeholders. Visitors also have every opportunity to become actively involved in addressing environmental issues affecting maritime industries throughout the world, and thus help lay the foundations for improving and preserving a healthy maritime environment.

The transition to alternative energy sources continues to dominate political developments and occupy politicians' thoughts throughout Europe. Some of the topics that will be discussed at gmec on 9 September 2014 will relate to green shipping, environmental protection, owner requirements, sustainable and efficient equipment, new design and financing. Topics will be reflected in the round-table discussion that kicks off the day.

The declared aim of gmec is to investigate and discuss today's key maritime environmental issues at the international level. The conference has lent fresh impetus to the discussion within the shipping industry, examining the relevant topics from a variety of perspectives. Making gmec part of SMM's Environmental Day has certainly been a great idea.
